Ocean Spray Atrium

Lakeville, MA, Spring 2013 Instructor: Jonathan Bell Ocean Spray’s current headquarters, completed in 1989 in Lakeville-Middleborough, Massachusetts, comprise a 99,000 square foot facility on about 16 acres of land surrounded by working cranberry bogs. Since 1989, Ocean Spray’s office culture — and workplace design concepts in general — have changed and Ocean Spray asked RISD to participate in the rethinking of their building’s central entry space and atrium in order to update their headquarters to reflect their contemporary needs and visions as they grow into the future. The studio is also being framed as a competition: Ocean Spray has committed to hiring and working with a designer intern whose work from this studio will serve as a starting point for implementing a new intervention for their atrium space. After visiting Ocean Spray’s headquater, I realize there is a need to promote collaborations between staff and farmers. Secondly, the cranberries bogs and pond outside the building is overlooked, so I want to enhance the connection between the atrium and nature and bring the nature into the space, at the same time, maximizing the flexibility of the atrium for different events. Thus, I named my project, ‘Natural Collaboration’.
