Garnet Museum
Providence, RI, Fall 2012 Instructor: Kalyn Pavlinic The project began with me being a gleaner, or a collector. After I completed my own collection, I had to transformed a small cupcake shop into a museum inspired by my own collection for scholars to study and explore the collection. I chose garnets as my collection. People usually overlook objects they encounter daily, and garnets is definitely one of the objects. When people see a garnet, they would associate it with accessories such as necklaces and rings. In fact, garnets are not only used as jewelries, they are one of the main components of water jets, which is used to cut stone and steel, not to mention garnet sand is also used to filtrate water. The main concept of my design is to reveal the properties, origin and daily applications of garnets starting from the perspectives of man-made constructions to natural sceneries. My design tends to bring out the connections between garnets and artifacts, thus provide an opportunity leading people to rediscover garnets.
